Detailed Itinerary

The program is flexible – you can stay less than 5 nights or longer, depending on your budget

Day 1: Welcome to Mariehamn

Arrive in Mariehamn by flight or ferry.

Accommodation: hotel in Mariehamn.

Mariehamn will be your base during your stay and from here you will do daily excursions by bike within the capital  Mariehamn and the surrounding districts.

Day 2: Mariehamn – Järsö, 9 km one way

After breakfast you collect your bikes at the RoNo office in “Västra  hamnen” (Western Harbour). Your tour starts with cycling through the city along the roads to the south of Mariehamn. You go over bridges which overlook the glimmering water and see the beautiful nature of the archipelago. At the end of “Järsövägen” road, there is a cosy café called “Stickstugan," decorated in the style of an old boat house. It´s called “Stickstugan” (stick cabin) because the owner, Lotta, likes knitting. Here you can stop for some lunch or just take a cup of coffee and enjoy the aroma of freshly baked cookies. There is also a small shop where you can buy some of Lotta´s handicraft, like wool gloves, scarves and woollen hats. You can also take a look in her glass house, most of which is made of recycled materials. “Stickstugan” is open daily from June - August. If you feel like a walk, there is a short, easy trail of 2 km which offers a view of the outer archipelago. There is also a place for your own picnics and BBQ’s and a toilet.

Day 3: Mariehamn – “Lemströms Kanal”, 8.5 km - one way

“Lemströms kanal” is a 350-meter-long canal built by Russian prisoners of war in 1882. It is a beautiful place near the water and an excellent stop for a picnic in the sun. It is fun, (especially for children) to watch the big boats waiting in the canal for the road bridge to be opened.

Day 4: Mariehamn – “Ramsholmen”, 6 km - one way

“Ramsholmen” is a nature reserve just outside Mariehamn with stunningly beautiful meadows which provide a magnificent spring display. You can stroll amongst the trees and listen to the bird songs. This is another great stop for a picnic.

Day 5: Discovering Mariehamn

This final day on the Åland Islands will be spent in Mariehamn, the capital. The town was named after Maria Alexandrovna, the Empress consort of Alexander II of Russia and was founded in 1861. One of the oldest street is “Södragatan”, where you can find many wooden houses dating back to the 19th century. In Mariehamn there are a lot of family activities, such as visiting the “Åland Maritime Museum & s/v Pommern” (s/v Pommern is the only sailing vessel in the world that has been maintained in its original state). You can swim in the sea, visit one of the three sandy beaches within 3 km from Mariehamn. You can also play mini golf or maybe visit “Mariebad” where you can enjoy the recreational swimming pools with waterfalls, swirls and waterslide. “Mariebad” also has a nice spa with great treatments.

When your day is over, you return your bikes to the RoNo office in “Västra hamnen” (Western harbour). The office closes at 18:00 (1 June – 15 Aug).

Day 6: Goodbye Mariehamn
